Amelia Island and the Middle Passage

Honoring the Journey. Preserving the Legacy.

Amelia Island holds a powerful and often untold connection to the Middle Passage, the transatlantic route that forcibly brought millions of Africans to the Americas. Although the United States banned the importation of enslaved Africans in 1808, Amelia Island’s strategic coastal location made it a secret entry point for illegal slave trading during the early 1800s.

Between 1817 and 1821, during a time of shifting Spanish, British, and American control, Amelia Island and its port at Fernandina became a hub for smugglers who captured Africans and funneled them into Southern markets. Many of these individuals were never recorded in history, but their presence and suffering remain part of the island’s story. more

Today, Amelia Island is recognized by the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, which commemorates ports across the Americas where enslaved Africans first set foot on land after the brutal transatlantic crossing. A historical marker stands in remembrance of those who endured the Middle Passage and in honor of their descendants who continue to shape the community.

At Coast One Tours, we are committed to preserving and sharing this vital history. Through education and storytelling, we honor the resilience, strength, and enduring legacy of the African men, women, and children whose journey began long before freedom’s shores.
